18/11/15 Neighbourhood Wardens
As a result of cutbacks within the area's policing activities, the Council will shortly be considering the introduction of Neighbourhood Wardens.

Whilst Neighbourhood Wardens are not the Police, they do provide a reassuring uniformed patrolling presence. Their role can be wide ranging and include dealing with low level anti social behaviour, engagement with schools and youth clubs, liaison with the Police using appropriate communications, supporting the community by offering assistance to elderly, vulnerable and isolated member as well as the ability to exercise powers such as to stop cycles, to require persons aged under 18 to surrender alcohol and the power to seize tobacco from a person under 16.
The Parish Council will shortly be looking at the financial and logistical practicalities of joining with Billingshurst in taking this idea forward. There is funding available for this project but if we do, after consultation with the community, decide to go ahead, then there will need to be a small increase to our precept. Inevitably there will be an increase in your parish rates but this will be kept to the absolute minimum and in any event any increase should not exceed £4 per year for the average Band D rated property.

To learn more about the activities of the Wardens, the Parish will be welcoming Neil Worth of Horsham District Council to the meeting on 26th November 2015 to speak, together with an existing Warden from a nearby parish, about the role and activities of the wardens. Please come along if you would like to hear more about this initiative.

Before finalising their decision, the Parish Council would like to hear from residents. Would you be willing to pay a little more council tax for the provision of these wardens? Please email your comments to clerk@pulboroughparishcouncil.gov.uk.

10/03/15 Adopt a Street
Members of the Planning & Services Committee welcomed Karen Grisley, Horsham District Council's Adopt-a-Street Co-ordinator, to a recent meeting to hear about the Adopt-a-Street initiative which encourages residents to take extra care of their street or an area they particularly value by volunteering to pick up the litter left by others. The initiative has already recruited over 400 local volunteers in the last two months.

Commenting on the Adopt-a-Street scheme at it's recent launch event, Horsham District Coouncil Cabinet Member for the Environment Cllr Andrew Baldwin said: “As a council we spend in the region of £1 million a year picking up the litter dropped by members of the public. We know that as a district we are fortunate to have local communities who generally take pride in the appearance of their locality but for those who want to go the extra mile and take more care of a particular area, this scheme is ideal. It is commendable that we have recruited so many of the district’s residents who are willing to volunteer to litter pick on a regular basis, it sets a sound example to the community.”

To support volunteers, the council provides health and safety training, advice to co-ordinate volunteers and equipment in the form of litter pickers, plastic bags, protective gloves and branded hi-viz jackets.

If you would like to make a difference in your area or get a group of volunteers together, please email Horsham District Council at hopoast@horsham.gov.uk or alternatively, call the Adopt-a-Street Co-ordinator Karen Grisley for a chat about how you would like to help on 01403 739387 or 07989 442 376.
